Stumped on what to buy for your loved ones this Christmas? A mini makeover for your house or garden could be just the thing! Meredith runs through a few tricks you can use to refresh your patio, porch, or even just a kitchen window sill.

Once when I worked in a nursery, many years before programmes like Backyard Blitz had even been dreamt of, a customer came in and bought his wife an incredible present…a garden.  He had arranged with one of her friends for her to go away for a few days, and while she was gone, he busied himself shopping, digging, mulching and even decorating his gift – with giant striped candy canes that he had borrowed.  I can only imaging the joy she must have felt when she returned home to find her surprise garden, one apparently she had been patiently waiting for during many years of home renovation.

Whilst you might not have the opportunity or funds to go to these lengths, the thought is still lovely and can be translated in many forms.  For example, imagine coming home and finding colourful window boxes bursting with blooms adorning the front of your house, or a stunning Christmas tree shaped Buxus topiary gracing the front door with a few decorations hanging upon it.  A much needed daybed on the verandah might be just the trick, or even a window sill of fresh, potted herbs for Christmas feasts.

If your budget can stretch to it, a patio or porch makeover, with new hanging baskets and some bright cushions for a seat, and a perfumed climber in bloom nearby could be all that’s required to make ‘all those Christmas dreams come true’.
