Planting a small herb garden can be a rewarding gardening activity for even the most inexperienced gardener. Fresh herbs are fast growing, easy to maintain, and can thrive in even the tiniest of spaces, such as a balcony or window box. Best of all, you can enjoy the fabulous fresh flavours of your herbs whenever you like! Meredith Kirton shares her top five tips for growing herbs at home.

Meredith’s Top 5 Tips for fresh herbs

1. Cutting your herbs back regularly, regardless of how much you’re using them, will keep their foliage fresh and flavoursome.  Take 10cm off every fortnight for the best results.

2. Grow your herbs as organically as possible; you want to be able to eat them without stressing about chemical poisoning.

3. Consider planting herbs in cuisine groups (spicy, French, Italian etc) so that flavours that combine well in the dish are grown together in the pot.  This makes harvest at dinner time easy.

4. Pots help contain herbs with over vigorous habits so that they don’t over run your patch.  Put things like mint, oregano and marjoram in large tubs about 50cm across for a continual supply of goodness.

5. Many herbs can add colour as well as flavour to both your garden and your plate.  Think golden oregano, variegated applemint and silver posy thyme for a foliage colour burst.
